When blood clots are broken down, Fibrin clots are digested by plasmin and these fibrin degradation products (FDPs) of different molecular weights, including its final product, D-dimer, are secreted into the bloodstream. The amount of D-dimer is elevated in numerous diseases such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). D-dimer and FDP detection is often used to diagnose thrombosis.
